Project Description

The Rt. 123 Bridge over the Occoquan River is just south of the town of Occoquan, VA. The 6-lane bridge, replaced a much smaller steel bridge that was overburdened by traffic in the Washington DC suburbs.

The new bridge was constructed using spliced precast bulb tee girders. The girders were spliced using continuous grouted post-tensioning from one end of the bridge to the other.

Kline worked with the construction team and provided construction engineering and construction support for the post-tensioning systems.

This was the first time that the Virginia Department of Transportation has used post-tensioned, bulb-T concrete beams in any of its construction projects.
