View 14 is an $80 million apartment building that includes a green roof and sustainable design elements, an outcome of the Green Building legislation passed by the City Council. The 34,000 sq. ft. building stands nine stories tall with two levels of below-grade retail space and underground parking.

After our in-depth evaluation, the concrete strength of the basement wall of the structure was below the required strength specified in the contract documents. As a result, the shear strength provided by the existing walls was deficient. Kline conducted a force analysis for each of the affected wall regions, ranging from two to five spans, to determine the shear diagram and subsequently computed the additional shear reinforcement required.

The supplementary reinforcement consisted of steel reinforcing bars, placed into drilled holes, and bonded to the wall using an adhesive anchoring system.

Kline’s solution allowed construction to continue without delay while ensuring the foundation was robust.
