Constructed circa 1965, this unique, 80,958 square foot building employs a three-bay continuous catenary roof system supported by a series of steel cables. This design is ideal for the multipurpose commercial building since the design dramatically reduces the need for roof-supporting columns, which in turn results in large open spaces ideal for warehouse storage and other business needs.
The main supporting cables are encased within cast-in-place concrete ribs with lightweight precast panels spanning between them. In addition to these, tension cables exposed to the atmosphere tie the catenary roof peaks together, balancing the system. All cables are supported by shear walls on one side of the building and anchored to the ground on the other side.
Due to the age of the building, Kline Engineering & Consulting was retained by the owner to perform condition assessment inspections of the cables, roof, shear walls, beams, and precast panels. After the inspection, our team performed an in-depth analysis of the structure and prepared a detailed report of our findings. Included with the report, we designed a repair manual with specifications for the rehabilitation of the roof and all concrete vertical and overhead repairs. Kline also served as the owner’s agent to ensure the proper execution of all recommended repairs performed by the contractor.
